NASTY CRASH - INDY CARS

This photo is of Alex Tagliani in the blue Indeck/Player's-Forsythe car T-boning Alessandro (Alex) Zanardi in the red Target-Chip Ganassi Racing car, during the CART race at the Lausitzring in Germany on September 15th, 2001 (the Saturday after 9/11). Zanardi was exiting the pits into T1, and when he stomped on the accelerator, the 900 horsepower Honda engine caused the car to jump out from the pit exit road onto the track, and right into the path of the oncoming Tagliani. The accident led to the amputation of both of Zanardi's legs; and in fact he coded three times in the chopper to the hospital due to injuries and massive blood loss.
